RUSSIA VS UKRAINE
– A WAR BEYOND TWO NATIONS
For the past few
weeks, we are listening to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. But the
question is Do we even know the reason behind this feud and its socio-economic
impact on the rest of the world, especially on India. Let’s just briefly
look at the history of these two nations & try to find out the answers
to our questions.
· The
Fall of the USSR (1991)
The end of the Cold
War marked the disintegration of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) into
15 countries, Russia and Ukraine being two of them.
Although the Cold
war had ended, the Western Nations had some other plans. After the
beginning of the cold war, the United States, Canada, and some Western European
nations collectively signed a treaty that came to be known as
NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization,
to provide collective protection against the then-called Soviet Union.
Initially, NATO had 12 founding members,
but as time passed, its members started expanding
rapidly.
Even some of the disintegrated countries of the USSR
started to join NATO.
Another question arises Why NATO is a threat so present-day Russia?
The reason is
simple. Any member nation of NATO can send its troops to the other member of
NATO. Moreover, if any nation attacks/invades any one member of NATO, all
the members will collectively attack that invading nation. Russia sees this
motive as its greatest threat. The US has already sent its troops to some of these
nations which are close to Russia. And in recent times, Ukraine has also shown
its interest in joining NATO. If that happens, the US will be able to send its army
across the border of Russia, thus enraging Russia.
Russia wants the
western nations to sign an agreement stating that Ukraine will never be part of
NATO in order to maintain their national security.
“Whenever a War
arises between two nations, the ultimate cost is paid by the common people.”
The present-day war will not only tremble the economy
of Russia – Ukraine but will also have some adverse effects on the Global
Economy as well.
v
Many European countries are heavily
dependent on Russian energy, particularly gas through several vital pipelines.
Even if the conflict comes to an end, there is a possibility that the harsh
economic sanctions on Russia would make it very difficult for these countries
to be able to import gas.
v
With global transport already severely
disrupted in the aftermath of the pandemic, the war is likely to create further
problems. The transport modes likely to be affected are ocean shipping and rail
freight. While rail carries only a small proportion of the total freight
between Asia and Europe, it has played a vital role during recent transport
disruptions and is growing steadily
v
The world’s unexpectedly robust recovery
from the pandemic recession left companies scrambling to find enough raw
materials and components to produce goods to meet surging customer demand.
Overwhelmed factories, ports, and freight yards have meant shortages, shipping
delays, and higher prices.
· How will this War Impact the Indian Economy?
The stock market has crashed significantly.
Prices of crude oil have increased heavily.
International flights may shoot by 25% to 45%.
Prices of Edible oils to increase as 70% of India’s Sunflower oil is imported from Ukraine.
Even though the
war is between Russia and Ukraine, the aftermath effects of war have already
begun to show Globally.
What are your
views on it???
